Cemeteries in Hamburg

In Hamburg, the dead were primarily buried in and around the five main churches of St. Katharinen, St. Jacobi, St. Michaelis, St. Nicolai, and St. Petri, which is now Hamburg's city center. Due to the enormous population growth and planned expansion of the city, these sites soon proved to be too small, prompting the Hamburg Senate to consider creating a new large cemetery in the mid-19th century. This led to the creation of Ohlsdorf Cemetery, the largest park cemetery in the world and the fourth largest cemetery in the world. In addition, there are many smaller cemeteries and traces of the old cemeteries, which I show here.
