The historic cemetery in Wandsbek is located next to Christuskirche church on Wandsbeker Marktplatz and is used as a memorial site and park. It was in use until around 1850, when the old cemetery in Wandsbek was opened nearby.
Notable features include the bronze monument commemorating the poet Matthias Claudius and his famous evening song (Der Mond ist aufgegangen, “The Moon Has Risen”), who is also buried here with his wife Anna. Another notable feature is the striking mausoleum of the merchant Count Heinrich Carl von Schimmelmann, the former owner.
Another grave bears the name of Johann Christian Helbing, whose family is responsible for the famous Hamburg caraway schnapps (originally known as Köm).
