Berlin has 220 cemeteries, spread across 12 administrative districts. Four additional cemeteries, located outside Berlin, are administered by the State of Berlin or the Berlin City Synod Association. 86 cemeteries are administered by the State of Berlin; the majority—namely 117 cemeteries—are owned by Protestant cemetery associations or church congregations. In addition, there are 9 Catholic and 5 Jewish cemeteries; other burial grounds are administered by other religious denominations or are privately owned. Of the total of 224 cemeteries, 182 are open; the remaining 38 are no longer in use, meaning that no burials take place there. Some of them now resemble parks. The cemeteries within Berlin’s city limits cover an area of approximately 1,089 hectares.
