King Frederick William III had the mausoleum built in the northwestern palace gardens behind Charlottenburg Palace for his wife Luise, who died at a very young age. It is shaped like a small ancient temple and is in excellent condition. To see it in all its splendor, you currently have to pay a €3 admission fee, which, in my opinion, isn’t too much, as it’s well worth it.
In 1840, Frederick William III died, and his successor, Frederick William IV, had the mausoleum structurally altered to give it a more Christian appearance. A further expansion took place in 1888 following the death of Emperor William I and his wife Augusta in 1890; their marble sarcophagi are also on display.
