The cemetery, which covers an area of just under 1.9 hectares, is the oldest Jewish cemetery in Hamburg and the oldest Portuguese-Jewish cemetery in Northern Europe. Due to its uniqueness, it has been a listed building since 1960.
In the 1870s, approximately 9,000 burials took place, 2,000 of them in the Portuguese-Jewish section and the rest in the German-Jewish section.
