Margravine Cemetery, also known as Hammersmith Cemetery, is located in the London borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, near the Barons Court subway station. It was designed by architect George Saunders and opened in 1868 on the site of former gardens and orchards.
The first burial took place on November 3, 1869. In 1951, the cemetery was closed to new burials and redesigned as the “Garden of Rest.” The grounds feature several notable monuments, including three listed gravesites. Of particular note are the bronze monument to George Broad (who created the Eros statue at Piccadilly Circus), the Young family mausoleum, and the grave of an Australian gold prospector. A memorial wall erected by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission commemorates 191 members of the Commonwealth forces from both world wars who are buried there. Two war memorials by the firm J. Lyons & Co. were relocated to the cemetery in 2002; one of them is a listed monument. In addition, a memorial dedicated in 1920 commemorates the 13 victims of the 1918 explosion at Blake’s munitions factory.
