Hampstead Cemetery in West Hampstead, London, opened in 1876 and covers approximately 26 hectares. It is managed by Islington and Camden Cemetery Services and contains about 60,000 graves. A public footpath divides the grounds into two sections. The cemetery is rich in mature trees and features a wildlife area with numerous species of plants, birds, butterflies, and fungi.
The Hampstead Burial Board was founded in 1873 to establish a new cemetery for the Hampstead community. Notable structures include two listed neo-Gothic mortuary chapels with a shared porte-cochère, as well as a historic entrance gatehouse. Restoration work on the buildings was supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Particularly striking are the many Celtic crosses belonging to Scottish families, as well as significant examples of modern and Art Deco stonemasonry, including the remarkable Bianchi monument.
