The cemetery is located in the northern part of the Bronx borough of New York City and, covering an area of over 160 hectares and containing approximately 300,000 graves, is one of the largest in the city.
Soon after its opening in 1863, it became one of the most prestigious burial sites in the city, which explains the large number of famous personalities buried there. Among them are jazz musicians Miles Davis, Lionel Hampton, and Duke Ellington.
