Inaugurated on April 30, 1869, the "Südfriedhof" (South Cemetery) is Kiel’s oldest surviving cemetery and is considered Germany’s first cemetery designed exclusively as a park. Paths wind in arcs beneath tall trees through the approximately 13-hectare grounds.
Just behind the entrance rises the artificially created "Kapellenberg" (Chapel Hill) . In a double ring, Kiel’s upper crust from the imperial era erected their memorials there: magnificent burial chapels, mausoleums, and crypts bear witness to their wealth.
