Covering approximately 16 hectares, the "Nordfriedhof" (North Cemetery) is Kiel’s largest municipal cemetery. A particularly striking feature are the roughly 3,000 soldiers’ graves, which reflect Kiel’s history as a naval base during both world wars. It opened in 1878 as a garrison cemetery on the site of former firing ranges, whose earthen embankments contain the graves of officers, sailors, and war victims.
In 1952, the “Kiel War Cemetery” was incorporated, serving as the final resting place for many Commonwealth soldiers (primarily from the Royal Air Force).
