Today’s Jabobipark was built on the site of the former St. Jacobi Cemetery, which was established in 1848 outside the city limits of Hamburg at that time. After the cemetery was deconsecrated in 1954, the area was converted into a public park. Today, old trees, bodies of water, and open meadows characterize the park’s landscape. At the same time, several preserved tombs and crypts serve as reminders of the site’s original use. Of particular interest are the tomb of the actress Clara Horn and the monument to the surgeon Dr. Martini. Among the most important historical structures is the neo-Gothic crypt of the Merck family. At the northern entrance stands what is now the Osterkirche, which was originally built as the cemetery chapel. It was designed by the Hamburg architect Alexis de Chateauneuf.
