The Simmering Protestant Cemetery was planned following a design competition won by architects Friedrich Wolschner and Robert Diedtel with their design “Friede.” In addition to the consecration hall, the complex was to include administrative buildings, mortuaries, apartments, utility buildings, and a nursery. On November 14, 1904, the cemetery was officially inaugurated, and the first burial took place just two days later. The site, which originally covered 63,600 m², was expanded in 1926 and 1972 and today contains approximately 6,000 burial plots. The viewing hall was redesigned in 1977–78 according to plans by Erich Boltenstern to include two ceremonial rooms. The modern stained-glass windows are by Hermann Bauch, while Hans Robert Pippal designed the small altars with crosses.
