The history of Simmering Cemetery dates back to the Middle Ages; it developed around the old parish church, whose “mountain cemetery” likely existed as early as 1378. Despite Josephine reforms, the historic churchyard was allowed to remain in use, before numerous expansions in the 19th and 20th centuries paved the way for it to become one of the largest district cemeteries. The Simmering Cemetery has approximately 8,000 burial plots and covers an area of about 57,000 m².
