St. Peter’s Cemetery is one of the most beautiful places in the city of Salzburg, located right in the heart of the Old Town. It also contains the rock caves in the Mönchsberg, which have been mistakenly referred to as “catacombs” since the 17th century. Unfortunately, I was unable to visit them because they were closed at the time.
The St. Peter Cemetery itself dates back to late antiquity and the early Middle Ages and is thus older than the Archabbey itself. It is located between Salzburg Cathedral and Hohensalzburg Castle.
With the opening of the Salzburg Municipal Cemetery in 1878, St. Peter’s Cemetery was closed to burials, as there was to be only a single cemetery in the city of Salzburg from then on; however, new burials were permitted again starting in 1938.
